Day 56: Great Wall of China

This morning I was picked up at 0715 for my tour of the Great Wall. I'd cancelled my original tour which was a 6km hike and found another one requiring less walking. The one I ended up doing was a different section of the wall, which is slightly more touristy, but it has a cable car up to the top so I could bypass the 1400 steps.

First though we went to the Ming Tombs where the Emperors were buried. I could've done without that as it involved quite a lot of steps to see not very much. We got to the wall about 1pm and had a good couple of hours there. I befriended a couple from Indonesia and a guy from Hawaii and spent most of the day with them. I actually managed to walk a fair section of the wall, as the further you went up the better views you got. The painkillers I took at lunch had kicked in by then so pain was far less. I'm so glad I went though as its an amazing sight. There were far less tourists than I thought there would be too so i managed to get some really good pictures. It would've been great to do the proper longer hike but I'm just happy that I got to see it.

On the way back we stopped at a Chinese tea house to sample a number of different teas. Usually I don't like flavoured teas but there were some really nice ones, like lychee and rose. Obviously this is a money making gambit, but I went straight back to the bus once I'd had my freebies like a true scot. Our bus driver was a maniac though and there were so many near misses. At one point he actually has to swerve off the road onto the verge to avoid going up the arse of the car in front. Dickhead.

I was disappointed when I got back to the hotel to have missed the messages from Claire inviting me out for a hotpot with a bunch of her friends. Damn not having wifi! It was too late to join by the time I got back so I went to a nearby restaurant called Little Yunnan then home to pack for my early flight to Japan tomorrow. Last country before home!

I don't want to jinx anything but my knee is so much better day! Whereas the past few days I haven't been able to bend it and have been dragging my leg behind me, I seem to be able to walk somewhat more normally now. Hopefully that means the pills are working and I can enjoy the rest of my trip!

  1. The Great Wall of China is one of the high visited tourist attractions in China .The natural beauty of hill points and mountains are so enjoyable for travellers. It is the greatest feat in human history. The Great Wall of China is longest construction project, created by China people. The Great Wall allows you to take photograph original and authentic walls. The great Chinese culture is Great Wall Hiking Tours, a colossal operation for which it is worth thousands of kilometers to visit it.
