Today I clocked about 12.5 miles walking around the city, so I certainly worked off the deep friend snake from last night. I walked through the French concession area and into Tianzifang market which is a labyrinth of little streets with cute shops and cafes. I bought a nice little Chinese inspired dress for Millie. Nobody else should expect any presents, just FYI.
From there I went to a hotpot restaurant for lunch. It's really a place you should go with someone else or part of a group as it's a sharing type meal, and it comes in pretty expensive for one person. The hotpot was filled with lots of spices and herbs such as star anise, garlic and chilli. I ordered beef and pork dumplings to cook in my hotpot. I was a bit unsure as to how long to leave them in there bubbling away so hopefully there's no dodgy tummy tomorrow.
Next stop was Yuyuan market, with lots of Chinese style buildings. There is also a temple and some nice gardens there, which I didn't bother to go into because at 3pm it started to rain for the remainder of the day. I haven't really packed shoes for rain, I'm wearing sandals so within minutes my feet are squelching . I took shelter in Nanxiang steamed bun restaurant, which is tipped to be the best in China. I found the dumplings I had in Hong Kong to be far superior though.
When I got back to my hotel I was knackered and not really in the mood for going back out in the rain. And I certainly wasn't hungry. The plan was to go to Bar Rouge on the Bund for views of the city, but visibility was so poor I didn't see the point so I'll try that tomorrow. Most of the bars in shanghai are in the French concession area, which is a bit of a trek from where I'm staying, and bizarrely the metro shuts super early here during the week. Basically I was a boring bastard tonight.
