This morning I took the metro to lantau island intending to get the cable car to Ngong Ping village where there is a large Buddha statue and monastery. When I got to the cable car i discovered it was closed until June for maintenance so ended up getting a tour bus which started off by taking us to Tao O, a small fishing village. It was a really cute little place, all the houses are on stilts as the people here believe if you are a fisherman you can't live on land or you'll have bad luck. The population here is much older, and it's where people go to retire. So it's full OAPs shuffling around on Zimmer frames.
Today it was a public holiday for one of the many festivals they have here. On this day people go up to the mountains and burn paper as an offering to their ancestors. So you can see fires burning in the bushes on the hills. I've no idea how people even get up there, these mountains are steep! They have helicopters that fly overhead to drop water and extinguish the fires. Seems totally bonkers to me. I get it's tradition, but it's a dangerous one. Especially when the village was destroyed by fire 17 years ago 🤔
This evening I met Resma for dinner! It was so good to see her and catch up. We realised we hadn't seen each other since her wedding, which was 3 years ago! Ridiculous. We had some pizza and just chatted all night. She's quit the corporate world and is now working as a teaching assistant and is much happier. Which makes me start to think about my own future when I get home. I'm also tired of the
corporate bullshit. But I don't have the patience to teach children either! Hopefully it won't be so long until he next time I see her!
Hong Kong has been fab. Tomorrow I head to Shanghai and am rather nervous! I think I'm either gonna love or hate China. Stay tuned.
